Meet
Jeff | Cool stuff about Jeff
Jeff
Savage's life work takes him to stadiums and ballparks around the country
where he meets the superstars of sports. He goes onto the playing fields
and into the locker rooms to interview the greatest athletes of today.
Jeffrey Errwood Savage was born March 9, 1961, in Fremont, California,
where he spent most of his waking hours playing childhood sports. In elementary
school, he listened to his teachers and earned good grades, but his favorite
time was recess and lunch period on the playground. At home, he studied
at the green wooden desk in his room, but preferred going outside to shoot
baskets in his driveway or play football with his friends. Today he is
still active in sports like skiing, basketball, golf, and karate.
Jeff's interest in writing was sparked by a bizarre incident in sixth
grade that he reveals to students at schools he visits. In high school
he played sports and, more important, earned good grades in order to attend
college.
Jeff
received an academic scholarship to UCLA, and later attended UC San Diego
where he became the sports director of the campus radio station, the public
address announcer at Triton sporting events, and the sports editor of
the college newspaper. He graduated with a degree in journalism and communications.
Jeff was a sportswriter for eight years with the metropolitan daily newspaper
San Diego Union-Tribune. It was more fun than work since Jeff got to travel
around the country to meet athletes and watch sporting events and write
about them. His favorite memories were football games like the one at
Denver's Mile High Stadium when he watched John Elway lead the Broncos
to the Super Bowl, or the one at Candlestick Park when he saw Joe Montana
riddle the Rams with perfect passes in a 48-0 victory.
Now Jeff is a children's author. He enjoys talking with athletes and learning
about their childhood adventures, but sometimes he writes books about
other subjects like the Wild West or Y2K. He is the prolific author of
over 100 books, and has received numerous awards for his work, with more
than half his books being adopted by the National Accelerated Reader Program.
Jeff is married to elementary school teacher Nancy Ann Conroy (Savage),
and together they have two sons, Taylor (born April 1997) and Bailey (May
1999). The family lived in the Napa Valley in Northern California for 12 years before moving in 2006 to El Dorado Hills in the Gold Country.
